Elf-Based GPS Communications Device Significantly Enhances the Game of Golf
Company Background: GPS Industries Inc. has developed patented, GPS hand-held and cart-mounted display units for the worldwide golfing industry. Known as the “Inforemer”, the multi-featured units are the focal point of an information system that incorporates unique wireless technology, Internet protocols and the global positioning system (GPS).
Customer Goal: To revolutionize course management, play and appeal with a portable mobile terminal that features a high-resolution display, robust enclosure, and GPS and wireless capabilities.
Customer Challenge: To provide a solution to suit the needs of every course, combining GPS, RF, and advanced computing technology in a rugged package with minimal power consumption. Creating mix and match options to allow courses to select and build a system, which suits their specific requirements and budget.
Solution: GPS Industries selected SECO USA to provide the low-power configurable computing platform for the Inforemer. By incorporating a modified version of SECO USA’s Elf platform and BatterySmart dynamic power management software, the Inforemer offers all-day use on the Golf course and is available with a series of display, wireless, and software options.
Including a multitude of peripheral options provided a significant challenge to SECO USA’s engineers. By extending BatterySmart’s performance- and power-tuned peripheral software drivers and resource managers to support GPS and other peripherals, GPS Industries’s power consumption goals were achieved, resulting in better customer acceptance of the Inforemer.
The patented mix and match Inforemer units are easy and simple to operate, upgradeable and suitable for all courses, regardless of budget or geographical location. They can be quickly attached to any type of golf bag or cart. A golfer can carry the handheld units to any part of a golf course where his or her ball may happen to land.
In just the same way as GPS is now used in guidance systems for precision range finding and extremely accurate targeting, “GPS Industries” uses GPS combined with high-speed wireless communications technology to deliver sophisticated information systems for the golf industry.
The Inforemer® is part of a comprehensive data network having the ability to collect data from the global positioning system (GPS) and transfer data between a central computer and a variety of peripherals including base stations, repeaters, and mobile terminal units (handheld and cart mounted). The method of data communication is unique to the Inforemer® system and is achieved through a combination of wireless radio and infrared (IR) technologies, as well as hard-wired phone and fiber optic cables all managed by Internet protocols. Wireless radio is used to communicate with the handsets while in operation on the golf course; IR links, fiber optic cabling, and a dedicated internet connection are used to communicate with the handheld units while being recharged in charging cradles.
The system is designed to handle up to 150 handsets on a golf course. Each golf course will have a custom version of the proprietary software with maps and information relating to that specific golf course. The maps are created from digitized image enhanced aerial photographs.
GPS Industries is the first GPS manufacturer to launch a truly complete golf management solution that can meet the needs of every golf course regardless of their budget, golf cart fleet size, type of play, physical challenges, or geographic location. With the help of SECO USA’s low-power software technology, unique reference platforms, and comprehensive customization services, the Inforemer is now dramatically changing the way golf courses are managed.
