Based on the NXP™ i.MX 8M quad or dual core processor, SECO USA created the tablet-optimized Fury-Q8™ single board computer (SBC). The Fury-Q8 is a standalone SBC,  offering a processor with memory, wireless interfaces, display drive, touchscreen interface, battery charging, and more on a single printed circuit board.  Additional peripheral interfaces are available via stacking connectors intended for connection to custom daughter cards.

The Fury-Q8, with the newly introduced i.MX 8M ARM processor, is ideal for embedded applications that require local processing power, complex operating systems, or high performance graphics. Available in quad and dual core options, the i.MX 8M Cortex-A53 cores each running up to 1.5 GHz.  The internal GPU can render up to 1.5 GPixels/sec, and supports both 2D/3D graphics and general purpose computing via OpenGL, OpenVG, Vulkan, and Open CL. This local computational capability allows for complex data analysis and decision making without the need for high latency and costly data uploads to a central server. Advanced video acceleration enables 4Kp60 video (including high dynamic range (HDR)), including H.265 and other video compression standards.

The i.MX 8M’s Cortex-M4 microcontroller enables real time control with low power consumption while potentially running a real time operating system (RTOS) such as FreeRTOS or VxWorks. Board-level peripherals and interfaces can be divided between the A53 and M4 domains to create security zones across the Fury-Q8. SECO USA’s SecuritySmart software suite can enable the M4 to act as a board-level security monitor, enabling functions such as authenticated access control, memory zeroize, and control of the A53 cores. Different software and security domains between the A53 and M4 cores can simplify and facilitate hardware and software certifications in mission critical applications such as medical, military, industrial controls, and transportation.

SECO USA provides Linux and Android BSPs for the Fury-Q8. A Fury-Q8 development platform, which functions as a rugged tablet development kit, will be available that includes the Fury-Q8, 7″ high brightness LCD display with touchscreen, BSP source code, introduction to SecuritySmart technology suite, and engineering support. The development platform provides an quick and easy starting point for Fury-Q8 based designs.

Example applications for the Fury-Q8 include: rugged tablets for medical, military, industrial field operations, human-machine interface (HMI) front ends for larger machinery and devices, remote autonomous vehicle/UAV control, specialized handheld instrumentation, and more. The Fury-Q8 offers a low risk, low development cost, fast schedule solution to deploy a tablet or tablet-like device with software.

For customers with specific product requirements, SECO USA’s engineering services can modify the Fury-Q8 or create custom interface solutions for the Fury-Q8.
